Dance, Food, and Crafts Prominent Within Online Holiday Folk Fair International

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Dancers, chefs, and artisans representing cultures from around the world will remain a key component of the 78th annual Holiday Folk Fair International, America’s premiere multi-cultural festival that will be presented online at the event website starting Fri., Nov. 19.

Videos of dance performances by the following groups will be offered as part of this year’s event:

  • Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl (Mexican)
  • Caledonia Scottish Dancers
  • Dance Academy of Mexico
  • Hui Hula O’ Ka Maile (Polynesian Dance Group)
  • Ildirim Araz Group (Iran)
  • LAUME Lithuanian Folk Dance Group
  • La Troupe Jeunesse (French Canadian)
  • Nefertari African Dance Company
  • Pommersche Tanzdeel Freistadt – Lutten (Pomeranian)
  • Tradizione Vivente (The Italian Dance Group of Milwaukee)
  • Turam Turkish Folk Dance Ensemble
  • Venezuela Danza y Tambor

Traditional ethnic cooking will be showcased, with video cooking demonstrations sponsored by Callen Construction, Inc., representing the following cultural groups:

  • Burmese – Laphet (Yuzana)
  • Chinese – Fried Rice
  • Italian – Lentil Soup
  • Mexican – Ceviche
  • Nepali – Chicken Vegetable Momos Dumplings
  • Polynesian – Huli Huli Chicken
  • Thai – Khao Niao Gai Yang and Som Tam (Sticky Rice with Grilled Chicken and Papaya Salad)

The cooking demo videos will be accompanied by the recipes that were prepared. In addition, traditional appetizer, main dish, and dessert recipes from across the globe will be available on the Folk Fair website.

Artisan demonstrations, presented by Winter Wonders, will also be included, featuring activities tied to the theme of weaving:

  • Canadian – Finger Weaving
  • Federation of Croatian Societies – Traditional Weaving
  • Filipino – Christmas Star
  • Japanese – Ikebana (The Art of Japanese Flower Arrangement)
  • Sokol Milwaukee (Czech) – Straw Egg Decorating
  • Sons of Norway – Woven Heart Baskets

In addition, Folk Fair will present three Facebook live events, one each day on Nov. 19, Nov. 20, and Nov. 21, through the event’s Facebook page. The events will include dance and musical performances and a cooking demonstration.

A program of the International Institute of Wisconsin (IIW), the 2021 event theme is “Celebrate the Culture of Weaving Community.” In addition to the videos of dance performances and cooking and artisan demonstrations, Folk Fair visitors will have the opportunity to view education presentations, “Folk Fair Perspectives,” a series of participant interviews, and “Folk Fair Through the Years” performance presentations.
